The Steer Stampede in Magdalena this weekend will be the first opportunity of the season for the Alamo Cougars to test out their capabilities at full strength.
Alamo Navajo is 0-2 after falling to Mescalero Apache 44-29 and Mountainair 50-37. That was without two of the team’s starters, junior guards Douglas Apachito and Filliam Herrera.
Alamo head coach Raymond Apachito said Herrera scored 25 points a game and Douglas Apachito had 12 a game last year.
Apachito said his Cougars plan to use a motion-style offense, passing around the perimeter and cutting through the paint to score.
“It’s something I made up according to the kids’ abilities,” Apachito said.
Apachito said 6-foot-3 junior John Padilla provides some size at the post and the Cougars will try to feed him the ball often for consistent scoring. On defense, Alamo will use a 3-2 zone that is designed to cause trouble for opponents when it comes to their outside shooting game.
Much of the season will consist of district play simply because District 6 has seven teams. District play begins Jan. 13, when the Cougars play Magdalena.
Apachito said the return of his two players from suspension this weekend will provide a spark of motivation for the team, as both are leaders on the court.
Alamo has three seniors on the team – Kevin Apachito, John Gonzales and Ryan Secatero – and three juniors – Padilla, Filliam Herrera and William Herrera. Sophomores are AJ Baca, Rayland Secatero and Filbert Apachito, while two freshmen – Elijahwon Apachito and Ambrose Begay – complete the roster.
The Cougars will play their next home game at 4 p.m. Dec. 11 against Reserve. |
