Memorial Day is celebrated the last Monday in May to commemorate the men and women who have died in military service.
The Socorro Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans will be observing the holiday with three special activities, the first one on Saturday.
“We’ll start the observances Saturday morning by placing flags on all veterans’ graves in the Socorro cemetery,” said Peter Romero, Commander of Chapter 24 in Socorro.
Observances Monday will begin with a flag-raising at Isidro Baca Park, across from the courthouse. Flag-raising and honors will be at 11 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
“We’ve already started cleaning the memorial this week. Our goal is to try to bring some life back into the park,” Romero said.
Another ceremony, including a flag-raising, will take place at the DAV building at 200 Fifth St. Following remarks by veterans, there will be a cook-out lunch featuring hamburgers and brats.
“We hope everyone, especially all veterans, will come by to eat with us,” Romero said.
There is no charge for the meal, but donations will be accepted, Romero said. The Socorro DAV will also be selling small American flags near the post office and Wal-Mart Friday and Saturday.
