The program will provide the same array of services with the intention of adding other needed services for residents in Socorro County and beyond.
Beth Beers, director of the Healthy Family Initiative, said, “We are really excited about the positive changes that will come with this name change. Along with the new name we will adopt a broader vision for the families of Socorro. We will continue providing existing services, but also we are encouraged by the prospect of securing funding for other family-promoting activities. The new name will be more reflective of our commitment to include services for the entire family.”
Healthy Family Initiative provides tobacco prevention education, abstinence/risk avoidance education, sun safety awareness, family outreach services, and a youth leadership development program for youths statewide.
For the past 12 years, the staff at Healthy Family Initiative has conducted health promotion presentations in all area schools, including Alamo Navajo, Magdalena, La Promesa in Veguita, Socorro schools and, most recently, educational outreach in several Otero County schools.
The latest addition to services is the youth-created, youth-driven website launched in November 2006, called wakeupanddrive.net. This dynamic interactive tool is assisting young people across the state in making informed decisions that will promote a healthier outlook for a brighter, more successful future.
Every staff member is passionate about the contributions each is making to promote healthy families in Socorro County and beyond. Staff members are Betty Cline, Laura Fazio, Nat Holland, Richard Chavez, Carol Sullivan, Kathy Latasa and Sara Kitchen.
